Tom Holland Talks 'Avengers: Infinity War,' Fantasy Casts His 'Uncharted' Co-Star
Sony has gone all-in on Tom Holland. The young star of Spider-Man: Homecoming will play the wall-crawling superhero for at least a few movies (where he will be shared by Sony and Marvel Studios), but he's also joined another franchise: the long-gestating adaptation of the Uncharted video game series. Or rather, the film prequel to the Uncharted series, as Shawn Levy's big screen version will follow the early days of protagonist Nathan Drake before he evolved into the experienced and cocksure adventurer and thief seen in the games.
But first, Holland will appear in next summer's Avengers: Infinity War, where he will once again team up with the other superheroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, he thinks one of his MCU co-stars should join the cast of Uncharted in the role of Sully, Nathan Drake's mentor and partner-in-crime.
Holland's interview with Yahoo is mostly focused on the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, but since he's currently working on the next Avengers movie, he also had a few things to say about that experience. While his Spider-Man tussled with and alongside members of the Avengers in last year's Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War marks the first time he actually got to actually, you know, act with the bulk of the Marvel regulars:
It's been crazy, man. It's been a really, really surreal experience. When I did Civil War, I only worked with Chris [Evans] and Robert [Downey Jr.] very briefly. Everyone else was sort of like, I was acting with a tennis ball or all this sort of stuff. I saw everyone, but I never got to work with them. For this now, I'm in a situation where I'm on set with all these guys doing scenes, fighting bad guys. It's been a real whirlwind. It's been a lot of fun.
And it seems like Holland has been making friends on that set. Specifically, he thinks his new Marvel buddy Chris Pratt (otherwise known to audiences around the world as Star-Lord) should play Victor "Sully" Sullivan in the Uncharted movie. Oh, and Jake Gyllenhaal would work, too:
I think Jake Gyllenhaal could be really cool, but I actually went to the Jurassic World film set the other day to visit my friend who is directing it and Chris Pratt is on that film, who I have become very good friends with over the last few months, and I think he would be a great Sully. I think it could be cool, because if it was an older [Nathan Drake] movie I would say that Chris should play Nathan, but I think he would be a good Sully and I love working with Chris.
In the Uncharted games, Sully is Nathan Drake's older, grizzled mentor, his father figure in the world of globetrotting and thievery and what-not. But since this movie will be a prequel, it makes sense that Holland would skew younger with his fantasy casting here. After all, he's only 20 years old – Gyllenhaal is 36 and Pratt is 37. To a youngster like him, those guys probably seem ancient! Oh, to be so young again!
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens on July 7, 2017. Avengers: Infinity War opens on May 4, 2018. Uncharted will open whenever the movie gods decide it should be released from development hell.
