If God Particle Is Cloverfield 3, The Star Of The Movie Doesn't See The Connection

We've theorized that the upcoming JJ Abrams-produced Julius Onah-directed space station set thriller God Particle might be the third film in a Cloverfield film series before last month, it was confirmed by The Wrap, God Particle is Cloverfield 3. But if you ask the star of the movie, she claims she doesn't have any idea how the films are connected and was shocked as anyone to hear these reports. Find out what she said about the God Particle Cloverfield connection, after the jump.

God Particle star Gugu Mbatha-Raw was recently interviewed by ScreenCrush and asked about the news that her upcoming sci-fi film is actually the third film in the Cloverfield film franchise. The actress was shocked to hear this news and claimed not to know how her movie and the other Cloverfield films are connection:

"I actually have no idea. That is news to me. When I did the project, it was a total standalone sci-fi, space thriller. So I couldn't tell you how it's connected. I don't know if that's just a rumor."

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

Is There A God Particle Cloverfield Connection?

Now it's very possible that Gugu Mbatha-Raw is just trying to keep the secret. Or maybe it's possible that God Particle isn't a Cloverfield movie. And there is the third possibility, that being: one of the stars of the movie is as in the dark as you are. Many of the people working on 10 Cloverfield Lane did not know it was a Cloverfield movie, and it's possible that Bad Robot has taken their secrecy to an unhealthy degree.

Before 10 Cloverfield Lane had been released, we had heard that JJ Abrams wanted to release a bunch of movies using the Cloverfield brand, each with its own stand-alone anthology story ala Twilight Zone/Black Mirror, but with an underlying connective tissue. We've talked a bit in the past about how Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane connect via a backstory that involves a mysterious corporation called the Tagruato Corporation.

10 Cloverfield Lane star John Goodman's character Howard Stamble worked for a subsidiary of that company, in a job that had something to do with satellites. This is how he first learned about a possible attack. In the background of Cloverfield, we see a satellite fall from the sky in the Coney Island scene, which was somehow responsible for awakening the Cloverfield monster. And I'm betting the satellites in space will come into play in this new film.

God Particle is another contained thriller, which like 10 Cloverfield Lane, was set up through Bad Robot and Paramount's low-budget division Insurge. The film is about a team of American astronauts on a space station who make a terrifying discovery that "challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, even as they desperately fight for their survival."  The movie was scripted by Oren Uziel and stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ziyi Zhang, Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Brühl and Chris O'Dowd.

God Particle is set for a February 24th, 2017 release, which means we should be seeing a trailer pretty soon and maybe this Cloverfield mystery will be settled. Of course, there is also the possibility that the film itself contains a reveal that the film is Cloverfield 3, and that the movie won't be marketed as the third film in the Cloverfield series.
