James Gunn Directed Stan Lee Cameos For The Next Three Marvel Movies

Every Marvel fan knows that a Stan Lee cameo is inevitable in every single Marvel movie, even most of the ones that don't take place in the Marvel cinematic universe. In fact, just last month we learned that the creator of some of the most iconic comic book characters of all time had already shot three of his upcoming cameos back to back to back. And now we know who was behind the camera for that little shooting session: Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

Find out more about the James Gunn directed Stan Lee cameos after the jump.

Entertainment Weekly was first to report that James Gunn had directed the upcoming Stan Lee cameos. This little tidbit was revealed by Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson following a screening of the new Marvel movie coming to theaters this coming week. Even Stan Lee's cameo in Doctor Strange was shot by James Gunn. Derrickson explains

"James shot four cameos with Stan in one day. James was texting me the frame. Does this look right? Does this look good?"

However, James Gunn followed up on this article, and he thinks that he only shot three of the upcoming cameos. Here's what the Facebook post said in response to EW's article:

"And it was definitely one of the most fun times I've ever had on set. There are few people in this world I love and admire more and have more fun with than Stan Lee. Even though he does love breaking my, and everyone else's balls (I introduced him to Tom Holland for the first time and he said, "Everyone says you're great! Personally, I don't see it."). Although, to be honest, I think I only did THREE cameos – one was shot by someone else. And my third probably isn't what you think it is...

If you've seen the Doctor Strange cameo, it was one of MANY versions I shot on the day, and Scott Derrickson chose the final one. If I'm writing for Stan, why give him one line when I can give him a thousand? I just kept throwing lines at him one after the other, until we were all doubled over with laughter. Someday, after you've seen the movie, maybe Marvel Studios will let me share some of those with you."

When we heard that Stan Lee had shot three cameos back to back, they were said to be Doctor StrangeGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. So it's probably a safe bet that whoever directed the fourth Stan Lee cameo in question did it for Thor: Ragnarok, because the hassle of flying Stan Lee to Australia (where the entire production took place) wouldn't be worth it for just a day's work, especially when they can knock them all out at once.
