The Best Movies Coming To Netflix In November 2016
Once this awful election is over on November 8th, everyone will probably want to binge on Netflix movies and TV shows to get the bad taste out of their mouth. Thankfully, Netflix has a whole batch of new programming coming to the streaming service next month. Among the new choices are one of Disney's most successful movies of the year, a recent Best Picture nominee, a classic Best Picture nominee, the return of The Gilmore Girls, a bunch of new stand-up specials and much more.
Find out all the movies coming to Netflix in November 2016 after the jump.
Normal Lear: Just Another Version of You
This documentary premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and now it will finally be available for you to watch at home on November 1st. For those of you who don't know Norman Lear, he's one of the most revered television producers of all time, responsible for bringing progessive shows such as All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude and more to the small screen. Jesus Camp directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady have crafted a captivating story about the flickering box and the man who essentially invented the modern sitcom. You can read my review of the movie from Sundance over here and watch the trailer right here.
The African Queen
If you need to brush up on your classic Best Picture nominees, Netflix is bringing this favorite starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn to their library. Set in Africa during World War I, the story follows a British Methodist missionary (Hepburn) whose brother is killed, leaving her to head back home on the supply boat called The African Queen. The captain (Bogart) doesn't get along well with the religious spinster, but she somehow convinces him to use the tramp steamer to destroy a German gunboat. Of course, the two also end up falling in love with each other, because this is an early 1950s movie. The African Queen hits Netflix on November 1st.
Burn After Reading
Even though it's not one of the best movies from Joel & Ethan Coen, this screwball comedy has some of the most boneheaded, goofiest characters they've ever written. They're all played by an all-star cast that includes Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, as well as a great bookend role for J.K. Simmons. It's funny, just the right amount of dark, and will be on Netflix on November 16th.
Paddington
Here's one of those family films that's surprisingly good. Ben Whishaw voices the iconic bear from children's literature as he finds a family of his own. It's very silly and decidedly British, but it's rare that you find a live-action adaptation like this that is just as entertaining for adults as it is for the kids. Plus, there's a sequel on the way, so there's no better time to prepare for that.
Boyhood
This is my second favorite film of 2014, and it's actually one of the best films of the decade as well. Richard Linklater shot this film over the span of 12 years, following the same actor (Ellar Coltrane) over the years as he matured from a young boy into a young man. Along with young Coltrane, Linklater used Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette over the 12-year production of the film, not to mention Linklater's own daughter Lorelai Linklater. It's a wonderful film that chronicles the trials and tribulations of growing up. It avoids all the milestone moments you see in typical coming of age movies and really digs into adolescence like no other film before it. Boyhood hits Netflix on November 25th.
The Jungle Book
After hitting movie theaters earlier this year, Disney is bringing The Jungle Book to Netflix as part of their ongoing deal to exclusively land the studio's movies shortly after they've been made available on home video. This is essentially Jon Favreau's Avatar: he shot the movie entirely on soundstages with visual effects bringing to life pretty much the entire jungle environment, including all of the animals voiced by Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o and more. It's a visual feast and quite the exciting adventure, but you'll have to wait until November 30th to watch it on Netflix.
