'Allied' Teaser Trailer: Brad Pitt And Marion Cotillard Are World War II Spies In Love

Robert Zemeckis' last movie, The Walk, sank down and disappeared without a trace, but maybe his next one will have better luck staying afloat. It surely helps that Allied boasts the combined beauty and star power of Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, who play spies in World War II. They're assigned to work together as pretend husband and wife, but as invariably happens with these situations in the movies, they start to fall in love for real. Watch the first

Pitt plays Max Vatan, a British intelligence officer, and Cotillard is Marianne Beausejour, a French Resistance fighter. The two first meet in Casablanca in 1942, where they're assigned to work together on an assassination attempt. They're later reunited in London, where war threatens to tear them apart. The trailer plays a bit like Pitt's Mr. & Mrs. Smith, if Mr. & Mrs. Smith were a dead-serious historical drama instead of a goofy modern-day romp.

The script comes from Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders and Taboo and writer and director of Locke. While Allied is not a direct adaptation of anything, Knight has said he was inspired by real-life events. "It's based on a story that was told to me personally when I was about 21 years old," he told Collider last year. "I've always known it would be a film, and now it's gonna be the ultimate. I can't believe the cast we've got, I can't believe the director we've got, it's just a dream."

ALLIED is the story of intelligence officer Max Vatan (Pitt), who in 1942 North Africa encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war.
