'Captain America: Civil War' Early Buzz: It's Spectacular, Especially Spider-Man
Last night brought the first screening of Captain America: Civil War for members of the press in Los Angeles who are attending a press junket this weekend. We'll have coverage of that after this weekend, including an interview with Kevin Feige. But first and foremost, you're probably curious about how this epic battle of superheroes turned out.
For now, there's on embargo on full reviews for Captain America: Civil War until April 13th, which is when the movie screens at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Thankfully, Disney and Marvel have allowed some reactions to hit the web by way of Twitter. The good news is that the movie seems to be pretty spectacular, with plenty of praise for Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. Read the brief Captain America Civil War reviews below.
Initial Reactions Are Full of Praise
Here's a round of initial reactions to the movie, with a lot of praise for the airport sequence where our superheroes have their first battle. Sounds like it's going to be an action sequence for the ages.
At 8pm, WINTER SOLDIER was my favorite MCU film.
Roughly 2.5 hours later, CIVIL WAR is now #1.
Action masterpiece. SPIDER-MAN!!!#NerdTears

There is an airport action sequence in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR that I would pay full price to see on loop for 3 hours.
Epic Nerd Tears!

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is a Barry Bonds steroids hitting home-run by Marvel & Russo Brothers. And I LOVED Spider-Man in the film. LOVED.
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) April 9, 2016
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR has such incredible action set pieces because you care about the people fighting. It's not just punching bad guys
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) April 9, 2016
'Captain America: Civil War' is so good, it's a better Avengers movie than the last Avengers movie.
— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) April 9, 2016
The big battle scene in #CivilWar is an absolute blast. Spider-Man, as you'd expect, steals the show. Ant-Man, as you might not, a close 2nd
— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) April 9, 2016
Captain America: Civil War is a complex mystery posing a big, fun superhero film. Lots of themes and emotions. Very unexpected & VERY good.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 9, 2016
I honestly don't know how Civil War works. There's so much going on but it does. Spidey is AMAZING. Made me smile & laugh till my face hurt
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 9, 2016
I could go on all night with this but one last thing. The airport scene in Civil War is probably the best superhero action scene ever.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 9, 2016
Just saw @CaptainAmerica Civil War!!! Wow! Spider-Man Rocks! Best Action Sequences in any superhero film EVER! pic.twitter.com/5uTdpYvFw6

Get excited for @CaptainAmerica #CivilWar Fantastic Characters, Amazing Action AND it contains the best comic book movie fight EVER. #Hype
— Andy Signore (@andysignore) April 9, 2016
#CaptainAmericaCivilWar delivers the goods. Endless Avenger v Avenger action. Tense and still funny. Boseman kills it as Black Panther.
— Kevin Polowy (@djkevlar) April 9, 2016
Captain America #CivilWar featured fantastic character driven writing & smart directing with both intense action & emotional moments as well
— Jeff Goldsmith (@yogoldsmith) April 9, 2016
So Captain America: Civil War is pretty good. Spider-Man and the airport brawl are pretty great.
— Chris Tilly (@TillyTweets) April 9, 2016
Some third act plot aspects aside, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is terrific. Boseman excellent as Black Panther. Dynamite action & drama.
— Don Kaye (donkaye.bsky.social) (@donkaye) April 9, 2016
How Are Spider-Man and Black Panther?
People really went our of their way to say how spectacular Tom Holland is as the new Spider-Man, and it sounds like he might even steal the movie. In addition, Civil War seems to be a good start for Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, which bodes well for his eventual solo movie.
Did I say Spider-Man is great? Because Spider-Man is great. (Though feels like the retrofitted the movie to include him). Really great.
— Chris Tilly (@TillyTweets) April 9, 2016
Spider-Man was excellently played in #CivilWar. His function in the story, plus the correct amount of humor made it really pitch perfect
— Jeff Goldsmith (@yogoldsmith) April 9, 2016
Spider-Man also gets a great introduction in CIVIL WAR. He and Ant-Man steal the big battle scene, which is awesome already
— Don Kaye (donkaye.bsky.social) (@donkaye) April 9, 2016
Spider-Man is both the best & most expendable part of Civil War. I want to see more of him
— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) April 9, 2016
Chadwick Boseman is fantastic as Black Panther. Can't wait to see his solo film. He absolutely nailed the role.
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) April 9, 2016
Black Panther is really, regally bad-ass.
— Chris Tilly (@TillyTweets) April 9, 2016
Batman v Superman Comparisons
There were some inevitable comparisons to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which are bound to rile up those who feel the need to create a conflict between DC and Marvel fans. Because there's absolutely no way someone can like both, right?
I'm trying not to talk about 'Civil War' by comparing it to BvS, but it's hard. It succeeds because it's exactly what that film is not: FUN.
— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) April 9, 2016
Civil War and BvS tackle some of the same themes and have similar beats, yet Cap works because we know and care about these characters.
— Mike Sampson (@mjsamps) April 9, 2016
There Do Seem to Be Some Problems Though
While the majority of the reactions were almost overwhelmingly positive, there were some shortcomings to be noted from some press members who still mostly enjoyed the movie:
Big airport brawl is great fun & Civil War sort of limps to the finish line after that. Panther is very cool. Want to see more of him too
— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) April 9, 2016
Unsure if ppl will find Cap 3 as fun as trailers sell it. Tony was far more morose than I expected. Parts of movie work better than whole
— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) April 9, 2016
Civil War is not a bad film at all. But it's not the great movie I'd hoped it would be. It's a good movie with many OK & a few great moments
— Jim Vejvoda (@JimVejvoda) April 9, 2016
A superhero movie can definitely have too many characters.
— Chris Tilly (@TillyTweets) April 9, 2016
I'll also admit, after 1 viewing, I have some small issues with the film. I'm guessing they'll shrink after a 2nd viewing to unpack them tho
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) April 9, 2016
Finally, don't be fooled by a batch of negative tweets like this from @Nickrob, because he actually didn't see the movie and is just trying to mess with people on the internet.
There is a solid hour in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR where absolutely nothing happens. Like THOR levels of nothing happening.
— Nickrob (@Nickrob) April 9, 2016
I think Marvel is falling on hard times. There's a fight scene in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR that takes place off screen. Frustrating.
— Nickrob (@Nickrob) April 9, 2016
There's a scene in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR where Iron Man tries to prove he's still cool by saying he likes the new Weezer album. Lame.
— Nickrob (@Nickrob) April 9, 2016
Don't get me wrong, these are amusing tweets to mess with people, but we just want to make sure you know they're not legitimate critiques or reactions to the movie.
If it seems like the movie is screening pretty early for press before the rest of the public can see it, that's because the cast, directors Anthony & Joe Russo and Kevin Feige are heading out on a world tour after this weekend, so they needed to get the domestic press day out of the way early.
Anyway, it sounds like Captain America: Civil War really delivers the summer superhero blockbuster were were hoping for. Plenty more will be seeing the film next week at CinemaCon, and there's a slew of advanced screenings for fans in some major cities across the country happening on April 14th. We'll likely get some more buzz after those screenings, so stay tuned for more.
Otherwise, Captain America: Civil War arrives on May 6.
