'The Revenant' Honest Trailer: One Music Change Away From Becoming 'Jackass'
Even though The Revenant took home plenty of awards leading up to the Oscars, and ended up earning a Best Director award for Alejandro G. Inarritu, it was Spotlight that ended up going home with the top prize, and deservedly so (Mad Max: Fury Road would have been a fine recipient as well). Thankfully Leonardo DiCaprio ended up winning Best Actor too, so all is right with the world.
The Revenant is on the way to home video next month, so now's the perfect time for the Honest Trailer to skewer the movie that is easily described as epic Oscar bait. The movie was specifically given mercy in the Best Picture nominee round-up from Honest Trailers earlier this year, but now they're not holding back. Here's the Honest Trailer for The Revenant from Screen Junkies:
Screen Junkies' targets here run the gamut from Leonardo DiCaprio's endless grunts, to his process of method acting in the cold with various raw meats in his mouth, to all of those gorgeous but overused shots of the sky. But for me, the real treat in this trailer is the revelation that the movie just needs a quick song change in order to look like footage from a Jackass movie.
At the end of the day, there's a lot to like about The Revenant, and you can't deny that the movie is quite an achievement in filmmaking. But the story was derivative, and it just never felt like it was really Best Picture material beyond the making of the movie. At the very least, it's just more evidence as to why Alejandro G. Inarritu is of the most innovative directors working today.
