Paul Thomas Anderson's Next Movie 'Junun' Will Premiere On MUBI

A new Paul Thomas Anderson movie is coming before the end of the year, but not to theaters. Junun, a documentary following Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur on a trip to India, will play exclusively on subscription streaming service MUBI, after debuting at the New York Film Festival.

Variety reports Junun will bow October 8 at the New York Film Festival, and then have its exclusive worldwide premiere on MUBI on October 9 at midnight. The 54-minute, black-and-white documentary sees Anderson joining Greenwood and Ben Tzur to the northwestern Indian state of Rajasthan, where they were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

In the 15-century Mehrangarh Fort, they built a makeshift studio to record Ben Tzur's new album along with a group of musicians from across the Indian subcontinent. (Nonesuch will record said album in November.) The title Junun is an alternate spelling of "junoon," which means "mania" or "the madness of love" in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, and Hindi.

"The results deliver the close camaraderie of artistic collaboration and a sonic, visual and sensory experience that will capture your imagination," said MUBI in a statement. Anderson added, "We're huge fans of MUBI and wanted to be a part of what they do. Hopefully people will discover both the music that's been made by Shye and Jonny and a great place to watch films."

Anderson and Greenwood are close friends and longtime collaborators. Greenwood provided the music for Anderson's last three narrative features, There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice.
