Idea For A Batman Easter Egg In 'Man Of Steel' Led To 'Batman V Superman'
Zack Snyder's Man of Steel established the new vision of Superman that will play a big role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While the upcoming film grew out of plans for a Man of Steel sequel, it sounds like the idea of bringing Batman back to the screen as an opponent for this modernized Superman came about pretty early on.
In an interview accompanying the reveal of new stills from the March 2016 release, Snyder explains his pitch for a Batman easter egg at the end of Man of Steel as the seed that grew into Batman v Superman.
Snyder told EW,
I said, 'What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there's a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor?' Everyone was like...'Okaay.' Once you say it out loud it's a problem because you can't unsay it.
I'd love to have a follow-up to that statement that gets into whether the problem of being unable to unsay such a thing is related to the fact that it permanently puts Batman back on the table, or because it is not really such a great idea.
Regardless, that idea seems to be the one that led to the battle film we'll see in March of next year. And creating that movie, and building the whole set of characters and films that goes along with it, was no easy task. Snyder says,
It's a marathon. No, it's a marathon within a marathon. Do you know that race from Death Valley to the top of Mount Whitney? It's, like, 100 miles and it's from the lowest point in the continental United States to the highest. It's crazy. Anyway, it's like that.
Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, but we'll see more next week at Comic Con. There might even be new footage online for non-attendees to take in.
