'Rick And Morty' Season 2 Trailer Kicks Weird Into Overdrive

With robots, parallel universes, technology run dangerously rampant, and an excellent group of five characters to watch as things get weird, the first season of Rick and Morty was one of the best science fiction shows on TV. Created by Justin Roiland (who voices both lead characters) and Dan Harmon, the series is like a super-twisted version of Back to the Future in which Doc is drunk, cocky, and astonishingly brilliant, and Marty is a shy and cautious kid.

With all that established, I'm hoping the second season will be the best sci-fi show on TV, full stop. The first big Rick and Morty S2 trailer is here, and you can watch below to see how crazy things might get.

In addition to the show's intense exploration of sci-fi concepts, it is also viciously funny, written with character arcs and deeply-embedded gags that pay off beyond a single-episode story format. The simple animation turns out to be a very capable vehicle for wild creatures and concepts, and most of which are both more outlandish and more complete than you'll see in feature films.

Can season equal or even top previous standouts? Those include 'Lawnmower Dog,' which features both an Inception-rivalling descent into nested dreams and a hilarious vision of a world run by tech-assisted animals, and 'Meeseeks and Destroy,' in which summonable helper creatures are frustrated by a task posed by Morty's father, leading them into total insanity. If the season does, it might just melt us.

Rick and Morty returns on Sunday, July 26th at 11:30pm. Watch Full Episodes.

Rick and Morty is Adult Swim's most scientifically accurate animated comedy. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, it catalogues the bizarre misadventures of a bored scientific genius/drunkard and his socially awkward grandson, Morty. Their exploits tend to have unintended consequences for Morty's dysfunctional family, especially his unfailingly mediocre father, Jerry.
