VOTD: How To Get A Job At Pixar Animation
If you saw Pixar's Inside Out this past weekend and you're an aspiring animator, then you might be wondering just how you can go about getting a job at one of the best animation studios in history. And it just so happens that we have a good resource with some helpful advice.
A couple years ago, back when Monsters University was heading to theaters, director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae shared some helpful advice for anyone with a passion for animation and a desire to work with the people who made Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, WALL-E and many more of the best animated films of the past 20 years.
We never posted this video before, but with Inside Out wowing audiences, we figured there are plenty of people out there who would still find this valuable. Find out how to get a job at Pixar after the jump!
As you can see, it all starts with passion. If you want to work at Pixar just for the money, then you're doing it wrong. Pixar wants dreamers who would do whatever it takes to make projects they're passionate about, people who would be animating and telling stories whether or not they were getting paid for it.
And if you think maybe you just don't have the right personality for animation, it doesn't matter if you're obnoxious and energetic or shy and quiet. That's because it takes all kinds of people to make the stories that Pixar likes to tell, and that's part of what makes them so great.
Finally, just like any other job, you have to put in your time and work in order to make the kind of movies you want to make. You'll start as a production assistant and work your way up the ladder, learning everything you need to know along the way. And before you know it, you could be working with John Lasseter.
