'Adult Beginners' Trailer: Nick Kroll Gets Serious With Some Very Funny People

Based on the cast list, you'd probably think Ross Katz's Adult Beginners was a broad comedy. The lead is Nick Kroll of Kroll Show and The League fame; co-stars include SNL's Bobby Moynihan, Community's Joel McHale, 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski, and comedians Mike Birbiglia and Jason Mantzoukas.

But while the Adult Beginners has some laughs, it's really more of a gentle dramedy. Kroll plays an entrepreneur whose career is in tatters. In an effort to rebuild his life, he moves in with his sister (Rose Byrne), her husband (Bobby Cannavale), and their young son. Watch the Adult Beginners trailer after the jump.

In tone and concept, Adult Beginners looks reminiscent of Joe Swanberg's Happy Christmas or the Duplass brothers' Togetherness. (In fact, the Duplasses are credited as executive producers on this project.) Apparently, low-key dramedies about screwups living with their adult siblings are all the rage these days.

Adult Beginners shows off a very different side of Kroll, but fortunately he seems to handle himself just fine. It doesn't hurt that he has some very reliable backup in Byrne and Cannavale, who have a way of elevating even the dullest projects simply by showing up. This doesn't seem like the film to launch Kroll into superstardom — it's too small and subtle – but hopefully it'll lead to more opportunities for him to branch out a bit.Adult Beginners opens April 24.

In the film, a young, narcissistic entrepreneur crashes and burns on the eve of his company's big launch. With his entire life in total disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister, brother-in-law and 3-year-old nephew in his suburban childhood home – only to become their nanny. This film is a comedy about priorities, growing up and beginning again – as an adult.
