New 'Sherlock' Image Teases Special Episode To Air In 2015

New episodes of Sherlock probably won't hit the air, at least in America, until 2016. If we're lucky, maybe late 2015, but nothing is set in stone. Well, that's not entirely true. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who'll both be seen in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, will soon shoot a special episode of the show that will air during 2015.

We don't know exactly what will happen in the episode as the finale of the third season offered quite the cliffhanger, but we have the first image that hints at the story. Maybe this episode won't actually be in sequential order with the rest of the show. Check out the Sherlock special image and see for yourself.

The Sherlock special image comes from the BBC One Twitter account.

And here it is bigger:

Sherlock Special

Now, the hats and facial hair have lead some fans to believe this special will be some kind of either time travel episode, or ode to the Sherlock Holmes of old. Writers, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat aren't talking, but they did post this tweet as well:

We'll probably hear more about this special as both Freeman and Cumberbatch do press for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Though Cumberbatch has The Imitation Game in theaters this week and we haven't heard anything from him, so maybe I'm just hoping for the best.

Nevertheless, we will get at least one new Sherlock episode in 2015. Depending on when they shoot the fourth season, we could get those episodes too but it wouldn't be until much later in the year.

What do you make of the new look Sherlock and Watson in this special? Do you think they've time traveled? Are they just going to a Halloween party? Is one of their clients eccentric enough to make them dress up? I guess we'll find out next year.
