The My Little Pony line of toys was first introduced in 1983 and quickly became a big hit, spawning video games, TV shows, and more. Popularity waned a bit in the '00s, but the brand took off again in the '10s. The resurgence driven in a large part by the hit TV series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which already has a line of direct-to-video movies. Megan McCarthy, who produces My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, will co-executive produce the new My Little Pony movie.

No plot details were given about theĀ My Little Pony movie, but one imagines it'll be based on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Surely Hasbro wouldn't just leave perfectly good Brony money on the table. The show follows unicorn Twilight Sparkle and her five BFFs, who live in the town of Ponyville in the magical kingdom Equestria.

While the last attempt to turn a Hasbro property into a big-budget franchise, 2012's Battleship, was a big ol' flop, Hollywood has continued to find success in existing Hasbro-based film series G.I. Joe and Transformers. And it hasn't given up trying to launch new Hasbro Studios franchises. Universal has Ouija due out this week, and Jem and the Holograms coming next year. Additionally, there are adaptations of Monopoly and Candy Land in the works at Sony.
