'Captain America 3' Set "A Couple Years" After 'The Winter Solider'
We're still almost a year from seeing how Captain America: The Winter Soldier will change the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but talk has already turned to the film following the Avengers sequel. Ant-Man will follow a few months later, and then in May 2016, the Russo Brothers will release Captain America 3. In between — because there's plenty of time — they'll direct a few episodes of ABC's Agent Carter. Talking about that job, the Russos dropped a few small hints about their Cap sequel. It'll be set "a couple years" after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, feature Cap's hunt for his best friend, and still have a political spin. Read some vague Captain America 3 plot quotes below.
The Russos spoke to Yahoo Movies who confirmed the film takes place "a couple years" after The Winter Soldier. In the MCU, the films tend to take place roughly as long apart as their release dates, so two years between The Winter Soldier and Captain America 3, with Age of Ultron stuffed in the middle, makes sense.
They then confirmed Cap's relationship with Bucky Barnes, aka The Winter Solider, will certainly play a role (as revealed by the end of the last film) but there will be more to it. "The character was invented for an explicitly political purpose. So it's hard to get away from that nature," Anthony Russo said. And then in a more cryptic tease, they said they're "bringing some new elements to the table that will give us a twist on Winter Soldier."
That's all well and good but, until we see the fallout from Age of Ultron, speculation on Captain America 3 is kind of pointless. Of course Bucky was going to play a role but with S.H.I.E.L.D now gone and The Avengers in charge of world security, who knows what the fall out is going to be after Ultron has his way? Captain America could end up in Space for all we know. (Highly unlikely but, anything is possible). Not to mention the script is likely not even done. The Russos will surely be able to say more once the audience catchs up to Captain America's story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1, 2015. And if you thought that was a long way away, Captain America 3 is out May 6, 2016.
