Andy Serkis Is Also Doing Mo-Cap Work For 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'

Over the weekend we heard a bit from Andy Serkis about his work for Star Wars Episode VII. The actor is also doing work with Joss Whedon and crew, however, for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Serkis is a principal in The Imaginarium, a company he founded to be the world's premiere performance-capture outfit. Now Serkis says he's helping out on Age of Ultron, working with Mark Ruffalo, and that he plays a role in the film, too.

Variety spoke to Serkis, who explained,

The Imaginarium is the performance capture consultant, and I'm playing a role (in both films). On 'The Avengers,' I've been working closely with Mark Ruffalo.

As is so often the case with Serkis, the question about his role then becomes whether or not he'll be seen, as a human, in the film. He smartly refuses to elaborate, however.

I'm not at liberty to mention. But it's all the same to me. I've never drawn a distinction when playing a role, whether it be live action or performance capture. Acting is acting. It's just basically what you wear to the set that's different... Performance capture was used on the previous "Hulk," but not to the same extent Mark is using it now. There are tools and ways of working with an actor that makes them feel that they own the character. And a character the size of the Hulk needs ownership, which Mark has now.

So our curiosity is piqued, but we have as little info here as we do with respect to the work Serkis is doing for Star Wars. What we can guess is that his role in Avengers will be more minor than his part in Star Wars, but at this point it is risky to even put too much faith in that notion.
