Chris Miller And Phil Lord Offer Update On 'The Lego Movie 2'
After next weekend, everyone is going to want Chris Miller and Phil Lord to direct their sequel. The team behind Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie have their first directorial sequel coming out, 22 Jump Street, and it's a brilliant and hilarious comedic follow-up.
That film comes mere months after another triumph for the directorial duo, The Lego Movie. A sequel was recently announced aimed at a May 2017 release but Miller and Lord won't direct. They're leaving that task to their animation director Chris McKay. However they'll still be a part of the project. In a new interview, they offered an update on The Lego Movie 2, as well as a huge hurdle they're trying to overcome.
Miller and Lord spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about a ton of things, but said this when asked about The Lego Movie sequel:
Phil Lord: [It's] still in the stage where we're sitting around talking about things and trying to figure out how to craft a story.Chris Miller: We have a lot of themes and some ideas that we like.Lord: One of the problems we made for ourselves is the brand of the movie is originality. So it's really hard to sequelize that.
That's kind of the problem the pair had on 22 Jump Street. Everyone knew a sequel was in demand, but no one wanted to make a movie just for the sake of making the movie. It wasn't until everyone came up with the idea of making fun of the sequel, and making the relationship between the two leads the main continuation instead of anything else, that everything began to fall into place.
The first Lego Movie set up a sequel storyline with the introduction of Duplo at the end, but the problem is the first movie acknowledged nothing in the movie was real. So do they ignore that fact and move forward? Or do they expand on that? Tough choices to be sure, but with a release date three years away, there's plenty of time.
Do you think Miller, Lord, McKay and others will come up with a worthy sequel to The Lego Movie?
