'Gambit' Trailer: The Coens-Scripted Caper Remake Slinks Onto VOD

Remember Gambit? Not the Marvel Comics character, but the remake of a great '60s caper that originally starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. The remake was scripted by the Coen Brothers — hence our interest in the movie. While that script kicked around town for a few years, it was eventually directed by Michael Hoffman. Colin Firth plays an art dealer who tries to con a wealthy buyer (Alan Rickman) into buying a fake painting, and enlists the help of a Texan lady (Cameron Diaz) to pull off the caper. While the film was finished in 2012 it never got proper US distribution. Until now. People have asked how they could see it, and with the film hitting VOD this weekend, here's a current Gambit trailer to remind you that it exists.

Gambit limps onto VOD this weekend. Apple has the trailer. Supposedly it is hitting theaters, too, but there are no LA listings, and Box Office Mojo has no listing for it.

Either way, seek out the original as soon as possible. It is available on some digital platforms, as a Universal Vault DVD release, and occasionally airs on Turner Classic Movies.

Harry Deane is a London art curator planning an elaborate scheme to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting. In order to dupe the buyer, Deane invents a story and recruits a steer roper from Texas, PJ Puznowski, to play the part of a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII. When Deane's convoluted con begins to fall apart, it turns out the simple Texan girl isn't so simple after all, and so begins a classic battle of the wits. Who will get the money? Who will get the Monet? Who will get the girl?
