VOTD: How Changing Two Scenes Could Have Helped The 'Star Wars' Prequels
Second guessing the Star Wars prequels has become damn near as prevalent as praising the original trilogy. George Lucas had some really, really good ideas when trying to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker's descent to the dark side; he just screwed it up at every single turn. Topher Grace reedited the films together trying to solve these problems, I've suggested remaking them, and numerous fans have imagined ways to make the films everything we hoped for in 1999, 2002 and 2005. We'll never be able to truly fix the prequels, but everyone keeps trying.
The latest theory comes from a man calling himself "Binary Bastard." He's created a video suggesting how changing two scenes in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith could have radically improved the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker. Check it out below.
You can read Binary Bastard's full assessment on his site, or just watch to the video. Thanks to Reddit. Or, if you really just want to know what scenes he wants to change, read below.
According to the video, the two scenes that needed to be changed ever so slightly are the opera scene between Chancellor Palpatine and Anakin, and Padme's death. After seeing Padme be such a strong character for three movies, Bastard believes her "losing the will to live" is a horribly unsatisfying way to end her life. She just had twins, wouldn't that improve her will to live? On this point, it's very hard to disagree.
His suggestion is, during the opera scene, if Palpatine had suggested the Force could both save life, and take it away, it would have left the door open for the idea it was Palpatine – not Anakin – who took away Padme's "will to live." Then, if the robots who delivered the babies tried to save her, yet for some reason could not, maybe it was the Dark Side that killed her. By making this change Palpatine would have been made that more evil, Anakin's role in his plan would have been cemented and Padme's death wouldn't have seemed so annoyingly random.
I feel like Bastard's idea is sound. It's a very quick fix to solve a few very big problems. No one watched that movie, heard Padme "lost the will to live" and thought "that works." But the video itself mentions so many other major problems with the entire story arc, that even fixing this one thing doesn't forgive the rest.
How much do you think changing lines at the opera and in operating room would have improved the prequels?
