'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' 3D Trailer Will Debut With 'The Hobbit'

Those of you who make the trip to Middle-Earth in December will be treated to a peek at another exotic fantasy locale: New York City. Specifically, Spider-Man's New York City, which unlike our New York City is filled with teen superheroes, giant lizard-men, electrified electricians, and HAL 9000-esque AI officers.

Director Marc Webb revealed today that the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would play in front of 3D screenings of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and he did so in the most delightfully geeky way possible. Check out his official announcement and get all the details after the jump.

If you're not a Hobbit-head, that's Elvish for "Watch for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer in front of The Hobbit in 3D."

While Webb makes a point of saying that the trailer and the movie will be in 3D, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer will likely also play before 2D screenings of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as well. Just, you know, in plain old 2D.

Sony previously unveiled the first footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at this summer's Comic-Con, but this will be the first real trailer. If you're curious to see what might be coming down the line, though, feel free to revisit our footage and panel recaps or the Electro-centric teaser from this summer. What we saw at the time was pretty promising, so we have high hopes for the upcoming trailer and the movie as a whole.

The new film sees Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) facing several new friends and foes, including Electro (Jamie Foxx), The Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), and Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper). Felicity Jones and Sarah Gadon also join the cast. Emma Stone and Sally Field reprise their roles from the last film as Gwen Stacy and Aunt May.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens May 2, 2014.
