VIDEO: The Making Of 'Sound Of My Voice'
One of the most buzzed about films at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival is finally making its way to theaters next week. Sound Of My Voice, directed by Zal Batmanglij and starring Brit Marling, focuses on two people who attempt to infiltrate a cult lead by a woman who has an incredibly intriguing claim. Made for well-under half-a-million dollars, the film shows that smart genre filmmaking doesn't need to have big effects, just big ideas with equally big answers.
Fox Searchlight will begin to release the film April 27 and, after the jump, you can watch a making of featurette and read some of my thoughts on the film.
Here's the behind the scenes featurette via Trailer Addict.
I just saw Sound Of My Voice this week and think it's going to generate a lot of talk once everyone gets to see it. That's in large part to the incredibly engrossing, polarizing story and top to bottom great performances. It's a really good movie. However, as you can see in the above video, it's also a very small movie. This works to build tension but is also a minor hindrance as its ideas almost burst outside the world of the film.
For example, while many of the true answers in the film are obviously left ambiguous, there are other small, seemingly simple, plot points that are also unexplained. These are dropped into the film every few scenes just to keep the audience guessing but feel extraneous and put us off the scent of the true nature of the story. With a little less mystery, a little less ambiguity, Sound Of My Voice could have felt even more cohesive and frightening. Where most heady films like this leave you wanting more, Sound Of My Voice, at times, let me feeling frustrated.
That said, I haven't been able to stop thinking about the film since I saw it and I'm sure it'll improve and expand on multiple viewings. Definitely check it out in the coming weeks.
