Don't Expect To See 'Captain America 2' Until 2014

Captain America may have been Marvel's real hit this summer, but don't expect to see the inevitable sequel until 2014. In part that's because the first sequel to Cap is really The Avengers, which is already set to release next year. But Chris Evans, doing press rounds for his film Puncture, says "They may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air. They aren't going to cannibalize their films."

The actor elaborated to The Playlist, saying that he's signed for three Captain America movies and three Avengers films, and that he's not likely to show up in other Marvel movies.

Out of those six films, if I pop up in one of those [other films], it counts as part of the deal. So if they needed me in a third Cap, and I say, 'Fuck you, give me $30 million,' well...they want to avoid that.

In other words, he's not going to become another Nick Fury. And that's for the best, really. Marvel has just barely managed to keep things in check as it creates an interlinked web of films — some would say the studio hasn't quite managed the trick — and throwing Evans as Cap into films like Iron Man 3 or another picture seems like a bad move.

Marvel has two dates inked in for 2014: May 16 and June 27, with the latter being a likely berth for a Captain America sequel. The film isn't yet formally announced, but with that June date falling just before the Fourth of July, it seems like the best possible berth for a Cap sequel, barring an actual 4th weekend release.
