Takashi Miike's 'Ninja Kids!!' Targeted For US Remake
The outrageously prolific director Takashi Miike is no stranger to remakes. Two of his recent films (13 Assassins and Hara-Kiri) are remakes, and he's remade Kim Jee-woon's The Quiet Family as The Happiness of the Katakuris, and Kinji Fukasaku's Graveyard of Honor as a new film with the same name. But not so many Miike movies get remade. Perhaps it's just that he works so fast that no one can settle on a target?
Looks like the first next remake of a Miike movie to come out of Hollywood might be Ninja Kids!!, the family film that has done well in Japan. (And which is an adaptation of a Japanese TV show about youngsters training in the ways of the ninja.) "A major production company" is reportedly in negotiations for the rights now.
THR reports that a well-received screening at the New York Asian Film Festival in July helped get people interested in the remake, but we don't have any more details.
Here one of the two trailers Angie ran earlier this summer. They should quickly clue you in to why this might be the target of a remake: it's fun, silly stuff with a heavy manga/anime influence. As a kids' movie, Ninja Kids!! could work really well if remade with the same energy.
