'Final Destination' 6 And 7 Already Being Prepped? Filming Back-To-Back?

Despite The Final Destination being touted as the last film in the series, that didn't stop Warner Bros./New Line from greenlighting Final Destination 5, so why the heck would it stop them from greenlighting several more? The studios are clearly determined to milk this cash cow dry, and their only motivation to stop is if the franchise meets its own pitiful death at the box office.

Such is the state of affairs made clear by a recent interview with Tony Todd, whose amusingly macabre, ominous presence is returning to the series for the first time since Final Destination 2. According to him, another two Final Destination sequels are probably in the cards. Read what he had to say after the break.

When asked in an interview with Dread Central what we should be expecting from Final Destination 5 — which may or may not be titled 5nal Destination — Todd replied:

Thumbs up! Thumbs way up. They expanded my part, and the producer told me as we were leaving Vancouver that if it opens at Number 1 – which statistically it has – they're going to shoot the next two simultaneously.

Technically Todd is mistaken. Only the most recent Final Destination film opened in first place at the box office; the others barely missed the mark, opening in either second or third. But the point remains: the success of this franchise has steadily increased with each subsequent film, and assuming that success continues, two more Final Destination sequels are just about guaranteed.

Ultimately, it all comes down to whether or not audiences have lost interest in the series following the lackluster offering of The Final Destination. It's very likely the reason for that film's unexpected success was entirely due to the novelty of seeing the Final Destination formula replicated in 3D. Now that they've already experienced it, is there really any enthusiasm to experience it again? I wouldn't think so. But then, many claimed the same of the second and third films, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't hit the theaters to see those opening weekend.

Final Destination 5 stars Emma Bell (Frozen) and Nick D'Agosto (Fired Up!). Avatar/Titanic Second Unit Director Steve Quale directs, making his major feature film directorial debut. The screenplay was written by Eric Heisserer (2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street), with revisions by Gary Dauberman. As of now, there's no set release date.

Here's the plot synopsis:

In this fifth installment, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man's premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. But this group of unsuspecting souls was never supposed to survive, and, in a terrifying race against time, the ill-fated group frantically tries to discover a way to escape Death's sinister agenda.
