Terence Malick's 'The Tree Of Life' Scheduled For May 27, 2011
UPDATE: Fox Searchlight has confirmed this date.
There has been no end of speculation about when we'll see the latest film from Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life. After hoping for a release date from Apparition all this year, that distributor essentially dissolved and Fox Searchlight picked up the film. Now a scheduling update at Box Office Mojo has the film dated for May 27, 2011.
That date is just five days after the end of the Cannes Film Festival, so feel free to wonder if the picture will premiere there. Thanks to a brief bit of info that the film might have a February release in France, however, there has been supposition that the movie might first show at Sundance or Berlin. (If it opens in France in February, obviously it won't appear at Cannes in May.) This is assuming that any of the data we have is truly correct. Until there's a press release from Fox Searchlight, this is just more info that could be subject to change.
Here's Fox Searchlight's synopsis of The Tree of Life:
From the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950?s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn), through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years – trying to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith.
Meanwhile, the director is shooting another picture now in Oklahoma. We don't know much about it other than it is a romantic drama, Javier Bardem and Barry Pepper both play priests, and Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz and Olga Kurylenko are in the cast.
