Devil - What Did You Think?
The biggest surprise twist at the movies this weekend? Devil, directed by John Erick Dowdle (and "from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan") doesn't suck. In fact, it's actually a fun little horror thriller, if you're into that kind of thing. But what did you guys think? Has M. Night become a better producer than director? Hit the jump for some of my thoughts and let us know what you thought in the comments. As always, feel free to discuss the spoilers after the jump (and there are tons of them for this film).
I went to a midnight screening of Devil not expecting very much. The film didn't screen for press this week during normal hours, which isn't exactly a strong vote of confidence from the studio. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the film's interesting premise, serviceable performances, and frighteningly effective use of darkness. Here's an audioblog I recorded with two friends while leaving the theater:
It occurs to me that this is the best M. Night Shyamalan film in years that M. Night Shyamalan didn't actually direct. And while I don't think it's a movie for everyone, if you like the premise and you like horror movies that take place in close, confined spaces, you'll probably get a lot out of enjoyment out of Devil. I'm now actually looking forward to seeing what comes out of The Night Chronicles next, which is something I never thought I'd say after The Happening and The Last Airbender.
What did you guys think?
