Ridley Scott Producing Movie Co-Directed By YOU, Set To Premiere At Sundance 2011

The Sundance Film Festival slate isn't usually announced until November. It's not even mid-July, and we already have official confirmation of one film which will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. You might be wondering how that's possible, and which film I'm talking about...

What if I told you that it is a new film from producer Ridley Scott?

What if I told you it's being directed by the helmer of State of Play, Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland?

What if I told you that Ridley Scott wants you to help co-direct the film?

THR is reporting that producer Ridley Scott and director Kevin Macdonald (State of Play, Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland) are joining forces with YouTube to create what is being called "the first user-generated feature-length documentary." Life in a Day will incorporate footage shot on July 24th 2010, submitted by YouTube users from around the world. Macdonald will compile the "most compelling and distinctive footage" into the final film.

They are calling the movie a "historic global experiment to create the world's largest user-generated feature film: a documentary, shot in a single day, by you." Everyone who has footage included in the finished film will earn a credit as co-directors, and 20 of the co-directors will be flown and put up in Park City for the grand premiere at Sundance.

Macdonald says the project "a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world's online community." It certainly sounds like an interesting experiment, and while I'm sure some footage captured on July 24th might be amazing, I can't imagine the doc as a whole will be that interesting. I mean, what kind of narrative can you put together with hundreds or thousands of collaborators from around the world who are shooting independently?
