Ouija Board Movie Update: Not A Horror Movie, More Action-Adventure

In 2008, we heard that Platinum Dunes had the option to make a film based on the classic slumber party and devil-summoning game Ouija Board, with few details beyond the assertion that it wouldn't be like Jumanji. Now, as the release date approaches for the latest Dunes movie, A Nightmare on Elm Street, producer Brad Fuller is talking about some of the company's future projects. Among them is Ouija.

His comments after the break, along with a super-brief update on The Monster Squad and The Birds.

Here's what Fuller had to say about Ouija, as captured by Bloody Disgusting:

'Ouija' isn't really a horror movie per se, it's definitely more of a big action-adventure movie along the lines of...I gotta be careful what I compare it to. But you know, it's like a big action-adventure movie. And that script...I've read a couple pages of it, it seems good. I think we're getting the full script in the next month. And that's a very exciting project for it, cause it's a much bigger movie, and it gives us an opportunity to try something we haven't done before...There are definitely horror elements, because it's about Ouija and what happens from an Ouija board, but it's a much bigger film. I would call it an action-adventure with horror elements.

Funny that Fuller is being circumspect about comparing Ouija to other movies, because a year ago he seemed pretty willing to name-drop Pirates of the Caribbean. So keep that in mind when reading his comments. Seeing Dunes make a massive action-adventure movie would certainly be a change, and I'm already getting a headache as I try to put notions of a Pirates-like adventure together with the Dunes house style.

Finally, with respect to The Monster Squad and The Birds, both are in the pipeline, but one is far closer to happening than the other. (Thankfully.) Fuller says, "we're all systems go on 'Monster Squad'. We're meeting with writers every day on that, trying to pick a writer to write that...'The Birds' we're still trying to figure out." With any luck, they'll continue trying to figure out The Birds for a long time to come.
