Sigourney Weaver Clears Up Bill-Murray-As-Ghost Rumors, Hints At Ghostbusters 3 Storyline
Sigourney Weaver has been doing a lot of press for Avatar, so naturally lots of film journalists are hammering her for news about her potential involvement in Ghostbuster 3. Just last week, she mentioned that Bill Murray might be returning to the film as a ghost. Recently, MTV caught up with Weaver in London to try and clear things up. The short answer: She hasn't read the script and doesn't know too much yet, but she did have one interesting nugget about the film's potential plot. Hit the jump to hear what she had to say.
When asked about Bill Murray's character again, Weaver said, "I don't know, I mean, he could come back as a sort of Slimer character." Pressed on whether she knew or whether this was conjecture, Weaver explained:
I don't know. I haven't read the script. They're sending me the script. I guess my little son Oscar, who was kidnapped, is a Ghostbuster, which makes me very proud. So [director Ivan Reitman] called me the other day...and said he would love me to take a look at it. In a few weeks I'll actually know what it is, though I probably won't be able to talk about it.
Weaver also expressed that she'd be willing to reprise her role in the third film, although the involvement of the original cast is still not certain. Ghostbusters fans will remember that Weaver played Dana Barrett, whose son Oscar was just a toddler in Ghostbusters II. Oscar was kidnapped by the Vigo character, who tried to transfer his spirit into Oscar's body. It seems as though Oscar's traumatic brush with the paranormal prompted him to take up ghostbusting as a profession.
MTV speculates, probably correctly, that Reitman talked to Weaver on the phone and gave her the broad strokes of the plotline before sending over the script. Reitman probably mentioned the possibility of Murray as a ghost, as I can't see Weaver just outright fabricating such a development. Still, it sounds like a lot is still up in the air at this point.
It should be noted that we first heard the possibility of Oscar's involvement in the plot of Ghostbusters 3 over a year ago. Things sound a little more certain now than they did back then, but hopefully the trickle of information will become more study in the months to come.
