Red Band Movie Trailer: The Mutant Chronicles

It's been an interesting ride for Simon Hunter's The Mutant Chronicles. According to Hunter, the movie has had many directors and actors attached over the course of the past decade, and has spent a lot of time in development hell. Hugely ambitious on a relatively modest budget, Hunter's version of the film has already been released and reviewed in Europe, and has made the rounds at some film festivals and conventions here in North America. It will premiere in the U.S. on Video-On-Demand on March 27, 2009, before getting a limited release on April 24, 2009.

Based loosely on the "Mutant Chronicles" role-playing game, the film is set in 2707, where four corporations are battling it out for Earth's rapidly-depleting resources. However, when a wayward bomb destroys an ancient seal, a deadly mutant army is unleashed. Mitch Hunter (Thomas Jane) must lead a dramatic mission to destroy the mutants and save mankind.

The movie is probably worth watching just for the cast alone, which features the likes of Ron Perlman, John Malkovich, Tom Jane, and Devon Aoki, each of whom almost definitely ham it up for some part of the film. To me, the movie looks like what Sin City would look like if you applied its aesthetic to war movie (Hunter also used a significant number of miniatures and matte paintings during production). This new red band trailer (and apparently the movie) are light on plot and character development, and heavy on atmosphere and action, so you'll probably get a pretty good idea of whether or not you'll like this film based on the trailer alone.
