Remember D.E.B.S? Ready For A Sequel Comic Book Series?
Angela Robinson's D.E.B.S was like Charlie's Angels, So Close or maybe Totally Spies! but, well, gay. Robinson is a lesbian and has tackled issues of gender representation, stereotyped sexuality and gay and lesbian relationships in most of her films – the notable exception being the Lindsay Lohan vehicle Herbie: Fully Loaded (and I can see the comments making that connection for you is going to provoke already, though I just wanted to make the 'vehicle' pun).
The film was quite unlikely, in some respects, being developed by Screen Gems from a pretty bold and 'out' original short that Robinson had garnered a nice streak of success with at festivals. Not a surprise of the same order as Sony seeing a short about some homosexual kickboxers and greenlighting a feature spin-off but, at the time, it gave me pause none the less. By all acounts, however, Screen Gems did Robinson proud and encouraged her to make exactly the film she wanted, so good on them. Sadly, this led only to cult success, and the planned sequel was never forthcoming. Well, not so far...
Now Robinson is talking about how she might bring her D.E.B.S back to life, and she's been inspired by another action woman. "I've been so inspired by the Buffy Season 8 comic books, I'm looking into doing the sequel as a comic." Add to this Rob Thomas' rumoured Veronica Mars funnybooks and we'll have a veritable avalanche of smart, savvy ladies up to all sorts of adventures on the newsracks.
Robinson also explained what her new D.E.B.S would entail, and it seems she has ideas for a prequel as well as sequel.
"I outlined a sequel which continues the adventures of the D.E.B.S. — the D.E.B.S. Academy is attacked by Lucy Diamond's former gang, led by her ex-girlfriend from Australia, and the D.E.B.S. need to go track down Lucy and Amy to help them fight this greater evil — and also a prequel — How Lucy Diamond came to be Lucy Diamond, her first romance, etc. If you or your readers happen to know any rich lesbians/D.E.B.S. fans who have a few million dollars sitting around that did not disappear in the financial meltdown, I'd be happy to make it."
Having just checked my bank balance and birth certificate, I don't think I'll be able to help out but hopefully somebody will.
