Some television show creators (or what they call show runners) have provided commentary on various episodes on DVD. Others like Battlestar Galactica's Ronald Moore, have gone a step further and released a weekly audio commentary in podcast form (just as Kevin Smith has provided a commentary that fans were able to listen to while his film was still in theaters). But as far as I know, no one has done a live commentary of their television show. Enter Diablo Cody.
Love her or hate her, you must admit, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody puts herself out there and is very accessible. I guess that's what happens when a blogger goes to Hollywood. Based on an idea by executive producer Steven Spielberg, her first television series, The United States of Tara, premieres on Showtime on January 18th 2009 (you can watch the pilot episode online right now). Cody has announced that she will be doing a live commentary of The United States of Tara on the twitter account DiabloOnTara:
"I am going to be Twittering live during episodes as they air," says Cody. "It'll be like Pop-Up Video only even lamer and more meta. As far as I know, I am the first show-creator ever to do live commentary, and I don't expect Chuck Lorre or David E. Kelly to be jumping on this train anytime soon. So I may be the first and only."
As of the moment I'm writing this, I'm one of only 4 followers of the DiabloonTara twitter account. I'm sure that will quickly change. As always, you can always follow my tweets on twitter.com/slashfilm.
