We Told You So: Apple To Launch Movie Rental Service?
I hate to say we told you so but, well, WE TOLD YOU SO. In July 2006 we reported that Apple was planning to launch a movie rental service through the iTunes music/movie store. Almost a year later, the internet has again become abuzz with speculation.
The movies in the Apple iTunes Movie store now sell for $10 and up, with most new releases priced higher than the price you could purchase the movie at Best Buy (and without the special features and high quality video no less). Rumor has it that Apple will launch the new service in Fall, and that it will cost $2.99 for a 30-day rental. I'm a little disappointed, as I was hoping the company might take the unlimited (or even limited) Netflix-like model where users could rent a certain amount of movies a month for a subscription cost.
