Warner Wants Wonder Woman Script, Joss Whedon Cries
I have never liked Joss Whedon. I always thought he was overrated. I've posted snide comments in the past which resulted in the backlash of firefly fanboys. Whedon has been hard at work developing a Wonder Woman movie for Warner Bros. Well today it was announced that the company are "quietly in the process of buying" a spec Wonder Woman script by virtual unknowns Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland. Could it be possible that Warner is not happy with the direction of Whedon's script? So much so that they are willing to open their wallets for a spec script?
The studio sources are claiming that the purchase is just a pre-emptive measure "aimed at taking the spec off the market to protect itself against the possibility that any similarities between the scripts could be fodder for future legal action." I just don't buy that reasoning. It doesn't sound right.
The Jennison/Strickland screenplay takes place during World War II while Whedon's takes place in contemporary times. And Silver supossedly has no interest in making a period Wonder Woman film.
But the script is said to have impressed the right people, more so than Whedon's effort. I wonder how much of the Jennison/Strickland draft could be used in the shooting script. I mean, I'm sure Warner is not buying a script purely based on legal reasons. If so then I'm going to start work on my Superman Returns 2 screenplay next week. I mean, I could use millions of dollars too.
