The Super Mario Bros. Movie Features A Fun Reference To Super Mario Odyssey

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has hit theaters, and fans like me have been scouring the film to find Easter eggs. Luckily, we don't have to go very far. Though you don't need to know a single them about them, there are plenty on display. The Mushroom Kingdom is bursting with references to the Mario games of yesteryear, especially as Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) takes his new friend Mario (Chris Pratt) to the castle.
Toads (don't ask me to explain the naming conventions ... one of them is called Chanterelle) use golden blocks as sort of an ATM that requires you to smack the block with your head. Another moment has a Toad bringing a Cheep Cheep (the giant goldfish in the game) home as a pet in a bag of water. There is an antique dealer who mentions blowing into a cartridge to make it work. He's standing in front of old-school powerups, a hammer from the Donkey Kong games, and even a Yoshi coin in a display case.
One really great reference to "Super Mario Odyssey" goes by fairly quickly, but if you're someone for whom yellow and purple means something specific, perhaps you noticed it as well.
An outfit for every occasion and a few Power Moons
If you've played Super Mario Odyssey, you know about Cappy, a sentient cap with eyes that can be used to help Mario capture and shapeshift into other creatures in the worlds he visits. There is also a shop — a distinctly yellow and purple one — at which you can purchase outfits, Power Moons for the Odyssey, and other things. It's called Crazy Cap, and in the film, it shows up right in the middle of the Mushroom Kingdom, past the block ATMs, and just down the way from the antique dealer.
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" doesn't let us venture into this shop, but it could in future films. It's very likely that we'll have sequels (and I'm all in for that), and it would be a surprise if they don't feature a bit of outfit-changing. The facade of the Mushroom Kingdom franchise location has the store's distinctive yellow and purple, of course, with the picture of Cappy on the top. I practically jumped out of my seat in the theater when I saw it. Now, look, Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo ... I'm not saying you have to make me an interactive walkthrough of the Mushroom Kingdom, but I'm not not saying that.

In case you haven't played "Super Mario Odyssey," here's a little more info for you. The first Crazy Cap store was opened in New Donk City. Each shop has the feel of the land that it's in. For instance, the shop in the Seaside Kingdom is on the back of a Dorrie and staffed by a Bubblainian, and the one in the Sand Kingdom (pictured above) is staffed by Tostarenans and features a cactus, colorful umbrellas, and hanging plants from a balcony.
You can pick up all sorts of outfits in addition to power-ups. Buy yourself up a black top hat, a caveman outfit, a sombrero, a swimsuit, a tux, a snowsuit, sailing duds, and resort wear. You can dress as a samurai or even an employee of a Crazy Cap. You can also pick up souvenirs like a plush frog in a top hat or a Metal Mario suit.
Perhaps we'll see more Crazy Cap in the (fingers crossed) sequel. I mean, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) did mention that there are a lot of galaxies out there, and maybe we'll need to do a little Power Moon shopping to fuel the Odyssey toward future adventures.
