Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Featurette

Every director has their passion project that takes them years to make, but it took Luc Besson 40 years to make his.

The Fifth Element director was enamored and inspired by the French comic book Valérian and Laureline since he stumbled on a copy when he was 10 years old, Besson said in a new featurette for his upcoming sci-fi movie Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. And it’s only thanks to recent cinematic advances that he was finally able to make the movie of his dreams.

The last trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was the best one yet. There was very little dialogue – it just shined the light solely on the huge world director Luc Besson ,and countless artists have carefully crafted, based on the comic books by Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières. In a new TV spot, there are some quick glimpses of some of the exuberant settings they’ve all created.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets wrapped production back in June 2016, but with a month and a half to go before its release, it looks like it’s still not quite done yet.

Elizabeth Debicki, who was recently seen in another fantastical space romp Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was just cast in a voice-over role in Luc Besson‘s sci-fi epic. The movie is set to be released at the end of July.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Poster

This summer, director Luc Besson returns to sci-fi in a big way with an adaptation of the French comic Valerian and Laureline in the form of the feature film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The movie came in at #7 on our list of anticipated wide releases coming to theaters this summer, and it looks like it’s going to be something wild and action-packed.

Normally, we try to veer away from highlighting just a single poster unless there’s something special to observe within it. Today we’re featuring a poster for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, not just because we want to keep promoting this movie so people will see it and help support big, strange sci-fi movies like this, but because the poster contains a rather intriguing easter egg referencing The Fifth Element.

It’s not every day a studio rents out a theater and hosts an event just to debut a trailer, but that’s exactly what STX Entertainment did last night in Hollywood with the new trailer for Luc Besson’s sci-fi thriller Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Besson, his wife and producer Virginie Silla, and star Cara Delevingne were in attendance, and I had the chance to speak with them about this jaw-dropping new look at the film.

The new trailer will be online tomorrow, but in the meantime, you can read my reaction to the footage, and learn more about what we can expect from this visually stunning movie. Read More »

valerian and the city of a thousand planets alien photo

There are over 2,000 different alien species in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Two years before filming, director Luc Besson was gathering drawings and designs for all the film’s aliens and space crafts. He even wrote to schools to see if any young artists were interested in contributing to the movie. They received over 2,000 applicants, and 15 were selected. Besson wanted to use different sources to create this wild-looking universe, which uses both CG and practical effects to bring all the aliens to life, including Ambassador Dan Makta, who’s shown in a new photo from the sci-fi adventure.
