the defenders poster

“There’s no us in team,” the caption for the new motion teasers for Marvel’s Netflix series The Defenders claims. But Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all look pretty cozy — and fierce — in the just-released poster for the series.

The four superheroes who fight on the streets of New York glare at no one in particular in the new poster and key art, looking like they came straight out of promotional material for a ’90s network TV drama. And I mean that in the best way, because those early 2000s promos on The WB were nothing short of amazing.

Check out The Defenders poster after the jump.

Defenders

The streetwise heroes of New York finally meet in the trailer for The Defenders, the miniseries that every Marvel-Netflix series has been building up to since Season 1 of Daredevil dropped in 2015.

Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand (Finn Jones), meet in a clash of fists and personalities, brought together by nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) and Stick (Scott Glenn) to defend New York against The Hand and a mysterious villain played by Sigourney Weaver.

Netflix Iron Fist Lewis Tan Finn Jones

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get loud, feisty, and opinionated about something that makes us very happy…or fills us with indescribable rage. In this edition: why Marvel’s Iron Fist really blew it by not casting Lewis Tan in the lead role.)

Could Iron Fist have been received better if it had cast an Asian-American as Danny Rand?

Until now, that was a pipe dream for many critics of the latest Marvel Netflix show, who lambasted the series for perpetuating the myth of the white savior by choosing to stay loyal to the comic-book depiction of Rand: as a white, blonde outsider who can punch things with his magic fist. But it was recently revealed that half-Chinese actor Lewis Tan, who played one-off villain Zhou Cheng in episode eight of Iron Fist, was on hold for the part until they ultimately cast Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones.

Let me take a deep breath. I have a lot to say about this.

Iron Fist images / BTS (header)

Netflix has more original content coming up in the next couple of years than we can count, but one of their next big productions — and one we’re especially curious about — is Iron Fist. Not only is it the last of the four standalone Marvel superhero dramas leading up to the Defenders crossover event, its hero looks very different from the others we’ve met so far. Whereas Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage have all been gritty street-level types, Danny Rand is a billionaire business scion with mystical martial arts superpowers. So… what’s that about? How’s he gonna fit into this (relatively) grounded universe? Who are his new buddies? And what do those Justin Timberlake curls look like in action?

We won’t really find out until Iron Fist actually premieres in a couple of weeks, of course. But while we wait, a new batch of images and behind-the-scenes photos are here to give us a little taste. Check ’em out below.  Read More »

Iron Fist featurette

Who is Danny Rand? That’s the question Netflix hopes you’re asking yourself right now, and the question it’s counting on to make you binge-watch 13 episodes of Iron Fist next month. We know he’s played by Game of Thrones alum Finn Jones and that he’s the final piece of the Defenders puzzle. But where did he come from? What are his powers? What does he want?

A new Iron Fist featurette touches upon some of those basics, while still leaving plenty to the imagination. There’s tons of new footage mixed in here amid all the Finn Jones talking heads. If you’d like to know more about Marvel’s newest small-screen superhero, click through to check out the Iron Fist featurette.   Read More »

Iron Fist Trailer

As hyped as we are for Marvel’s The Defenders, we’ve still got one last stop before we get there. Next month brings Iron Fist, which introduces Danny Rand (Finn Jones) as the fourth and final Defender and brings some magical martial arts into the mix. The new trailer plays kind of like a lighter Batman Begins, with Danny — the long-lost scion of a multibillion-dollar corporate enterprise — returning with some mysterious powers to reclaim his place in society and beat up lots of bad guys along the way.

Rosario Dawson returns as Claire Temple, basically the glue holding this entire corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together; and Jessica Henwick plays Danny’s new friend Colleen Wing. Watch the Iron Fist trailer below.  Read More »

The Defenders details / Trish Walker and Jessica Jones

After literally years of hype, Netflix has finally started pulling back the curtains on The Defenders, the crossover series that brings together Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones). Last week we got our first official look at the heroes all together and our first glimpse of Sigourney Weaver‘s villain; today we have still more new photos plus a whole bunch of new details about the characters, their relationships to one another, and how The Defenders will tie them all together.  Read More »

The Defenders - Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter)

As we’ve already established, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist aren’t exactly team player types. It’d probably take a monumental threat to bring the four of them together for The Defenders, and over the summer we learned the face of that threat would be Sigourney Weaver. Since then, details about her mysterious The Defenders villain character have been kept under very tight wraps. But today brings our first look at Weaver in character, along with a few new details about her — including her name.

See the first The Defenders Sigourney Weaver photo below, plus a whole bunch of new images featuring the various Defenders in different configurations. (My favorite of those new photos is the one highlighted above.) Read More »

The Defenders first look

First announced over three years ago, Marvel’s The Defenders is finally coming to Netflix this summer. And we’ve got the first look to prove it. A new promo image brings together Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Daredevil (Charlie Cox), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) for the very first time in their beloved hometown of New York City.

Along with that photo, we’ve also got new quotes from showrunner Marco Ramirez about how exactly it is the Defenders come to join forces, and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb on what makes the Defenders different from certain other superhero teams (like the one headquartered just across town at Stark Tower). Check it out below.
