When filmmaker Luc Besson was 10 years old, he was reading the comic book he’d adapt into a massive feature film 48 years later. Based on Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières‘ “Ambassador of Shadows,” published in 1975, Besson has brought their colorful, wacky world to to the big screen with his personal touch on every frame. From the complex, clever set pieces to the jokes to the colorful environments, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is pure Besson.
In a race against the clock, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) will have to save the city of Alpha, where alien species from all over the galaxy come together to share knowledge. The world feels endless, full of all sorts of aliens, characters, and environments. It took many years it took to build this world piece-by-piece, and the French director behind La Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element recently told us about the process.
Below, check out our Luc Besson interview.

Can you believe that what started out as a random tweet has now become one of Netflix’s upcoming original films? The now-famous tweet of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o fabulously attending a Paris Fashion Week show will now be realized as a project directed by Ava DuVernay with a script by Issa Rae. With so much star power behind this idea, does this mean that Twitter has now officially become the next generator of blockbuster films?

17 years after Steven Soderbergh gave us one of the most charismatic casts to grace the screen in the 21st century with Ocean’s 11, we’ll see a new team of thieves form in Ocean’s Eight. Director Gary Ross put together a hell of a crew, too, with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. One member of Danny Ocean’s gang will appear with them in the film, and now another actor from Soderbergh’s trilogy is now confirmed to join in on the fun.
It’s a cameo, so it’s a spoiler, but if you want to know who else is making an Ocean’s Eight cameo, find out below.

Bates Motel returns for its fifth season on February 20th. The show, which more than a few people were initially skeptical about, went on to become a success for A&E. While the series began to lose some steam around season two or three, it’s now coming to a close with season five, which creators Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) had always envisioned. Actor, singer and artist Rihanna is a part of the final season, and she’s co-starring as Marion Crane, famously played by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock‘s Psycho.
Below, get your first look at Rihanna in Bates Motel.

One of New York’s interesting little quirks is that just about everyone takes the train. Even, apparently, criminal masterminds on their way to stage a multimillion-dollar heist at one of the glitziest events of the year. At least that’s my takeaway from our first look at Ocean’s 8, which puts Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) and her crew (including characters played by Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, and Anne Hathaway) on an MTA subway car. Check it out below. Read More »
The producer and co-creator of Bates Motel, Carlton Cuse (Lost), never thought Bates Motel was a story that needed eight or nine seasons. Cuse and co-creator Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) saw the show coming to an end after season five, which A&E and all involved are indeed planning to do. The show returns next month for its last season, which features actor/singer Rihanna in a key supporting role.
Below, watch the Bates Motel season five trailer. Spoilers follow.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets‘ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con went great. Hall H may not have been full and many in attendance weren’t familiar with the property — a French comic book series written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières — but the concept art and clips raised our expectations for Luc Besson‘s sci-fi adventure. The Fifth Element director is possibly cooking up something big, weird, and exuberant, and you can now get a taste of what he’s been dreaming about making for years.
Below, watch the first Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets trailer.

Over the past couple months, the cast of the Ocean’s Eleven spin-off Ocean’s Eight has slowly been filling out. Sandra Bullock was the first name attached to the project, and we later learned that she would be playing Danny Ocean’s sister, who also happens to be a charming ex-con just like her brother. Since then, the cast has added Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling, but now three more names have just been added to the roster. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Normally we don’t post music videos unless they’re directed by a filmmaker whose work we’ve highlighted before or unless they’re tied directly to the release of a new movie. Today, we have one that fulfills both, and it just so happens to have the added bonus of being shot entirely in IMAX.
Earlier this week, a new Star Trek Beyond trailer debuted featuring the new single “Sledgehammer” from Rihanna, a ballad that felt reminiscent of a classic James Bond theme song. Now that track has gotten its own music video from director Floria Sigismondi, who previously helmed the rock biopic The Runaways as well as an episode of Netflix’s Daredevil series. It’s a wild, trippy music video featuring Rihanna as some kind of space witch, and it has some truly stunning visuals.

There are plenty of reasons to get excited about Star Trek Beyond. It’s the new film by Justin Lin, the man who shepherded the Fast and Furious series into blockbuster-dom. It’s got a fantastic cast, with Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella joining the returning stars. And it looks like tons of fun, combining eye-popping action with plenty of drama and heart. But if you’re still skeptical, maybe this next trailer will be the one to win you over. It’s got a secret weapon in the form of “Sledgehammer,” a new single by Rihanna. Check it out after the jump.
