Here’s another new show to add to your fall TV to-do list. Amazon Studios has just debuted the first trailer for Red Oaks, a 1980s comedy executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and David Gordon Green. Craig Roberts plays David, a college student uncertain about his future. He picks up a summer job at a country club, where he meets all sorts of characters who teach him about life and about himself.
If that sounds like it’s got a strong Adventureland vibe to it, the Red Oaks trailer isn’t exactly going to dissuade you of that notion. Watch it after the jump. Read More »
The lone secret premiere of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival ended up being Ben Affleck‘s dramatic thriller Argo.
I’ve never understood the negativity regularly thrown at Ben Affleck. When given the right material, he’s delivered some great performances as an actor (Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, Boiler Room, Hollywoodland…etc). And in recent years he’s made the transition and proven himself to be a great director (Gone Baby Gone, The Town). Argo is his third feature film and it’s his smartest yet.

“This is the best bad idea we have, sir, by far.”
Here’s the trailer for Argo, Ben Affleck‘s third film as director. The film follows the efforts of an operation to rescue six diplomats hiding in Tehran during the Iranian revolution in 1979. The trailer begins in serious political thriller mode before the real plan is revealed and it moves into an Oceans Eleven tone for a moment. But it swings back as the real importance of the mission becomes clear.
This trailer demonstrates that the material could really put Affleck to the test as he has to balance a tricky combination of tones and situations. But his cast is excellent: Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Kerry Bishe, Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, and Taylor Schilling. The footage looks great, and keeps this locked as one of our most anticipated movies of the year. Check out the trailer below. Read More »
Michael Mann (Heat) and David Milch (Deadwood) have collaborated on Luck, a new HBO series that takes place in the world of horse racing. Dustin Hoffman plays what looks like this series’ rough equivalent to Al Swearingen, and Nick Nolte, Richard Kind, Dennis Farina, John Ortiz, Joan Allen, Ian Hart, Kevin Dunn, Kerry Condon, Tom Payne and Patrick J. Adams all have roles.
We saw a brief bit of footage back in April thanks to an in-production featurette. Now we’ve got the real, if all-too-brief teaser trailer for the series. As you’d hope for a show created by Mann and Milch and featuring that cast, Luck looks pretty fantastic. Check it out below. Read More »
Warner Bros has sent out the obligatory press release to announce the commencement of filming on Ben Affleck‘s third film as director, Argo. We’ve known most of the cast for a while: Affleck, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman, with more recent additions Kyle Chandler, Tate Donovan, Rory Cochrane and Taylor Schilling.
Now we’ve got an official synopsis for the film, which adapts the true story of a CIA team that posed as a film crew in order to extract diplomats from Tehran in 1979. But perhaps of more interest to some who already know the story is the confirmation of cast additions that include the great Michael Parks (above), as well as Clea Duvall and Richard Kind. I never thought I’d be this jazzed to see a horse-racing drama, but ‘jazzed’ only begins to capture how I feel after watching the first behind the scenes look at Luck, the HBO show from Michael Mann and David Milch that stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. This video is a relatively brief featurette on the making of the show, but it has enough tiny clips of the actors in action that I think you’ll walk away from it wanting to see a lot more. Entertainment Weekly has out first (or last?) glimpse of the 12-minute Lost epilogue “The New Man in Charge” that will be included on the Series Finale DVD/Blu-ray set. Actor Michael Emerson reveals that “Ben is going around to Dharma installations and closing some down. There are some good surprises.” And yes, ”it does answer questions.'”
