WarnerMedia has angered nearly everyone in Hollywood. But at least it’s got a few million more subscribers, according to AT&T CEO John Stankey, who came to the defense of the divisive Warner Bros. HBO Max release plan, which will debut all of Warner Bros.’ 2021 theatrical slate to the WarnerMedia streaming platform on the same day-and-date as theatrical release. Stankey, during his appearance at the UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference, called the decision a “win-win-win” for the company, its partners, and consumers.

HBO Max has passed a milestone for AT&T’s WarnerMedia, which revealed that it has hit 38 million combined HBO and HBO Max customers — ahead of the company’s target of 37 million by the end of 2020. The WarnerMedia streaming platform added 8.6 million customers in the third quarter, bringing its total number of new “subscribers” to 28.7 million. But not all of those subscribers are watching HBO Max just yet.

The battle for the superior streaming service will be fought in boardrooms and banks. As Hollywood’s biggest companies and studios turn their eye to streaming platforms, they’re also emptying their wallets with the knowledge that these platforms won’t be profitable for at least several years.

But that won’t stop AT&T, which last year acquired WarnerMedia in a massive merger, from spending upwards of $2 billion on its forthcoming streaming service HBO Max.
