'The Mummy' Featurette: Tom Cruise Goes Globetrotting After A Monster
Next weekend, we'll get a sense of how audiences feel about Universal's Dark Universe. Alex Kurtzman's The Mummy gets the monster party started, but whether the world wants a world of gods and monsters, we'll see soon enough. The movie is on track to make $40 million its opening weekend in the states, but with the power of Tom Cruise, it should perform even better overseas. If one thing seems for sure, it's that Kurtzman's film doesn't lack scope, as a new behind-the-scenes featurette suggests.
Below, check out The Mummy featurette.
Kurtzman has written some huge movies in his career. With the Star Trek films, Transformers, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he's played in some large and expensive sandboxes. Behind the camera, we'll see how he fares painting on a canvas much, much, much larger than his directorial debut, People Like Us, a heartfelt, if a bit shaggy, drama.
With his second feature, he's going big with a DP who knows to create a tremendous sense of scale. Kurtzman worked with cinematographer Ben Seresin on The Mummy, who shot World War Z, Unstoppable, Pain & Gain, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Some of those movies also have some great daylight action, which The Mummy looks have its share of.
Here's The Mummy featurette, which contains some of the puffiness you expect but also a nice little tease of the film's scope:
Let's just hope the action has as much character as the Universal Monster classics do. That's the spirit of those movies. Nick Morton is still a bit of an enigma from the marketing materials, although it's clear he isn't the noblest hero at the start of the movie, but Sofia Boutella does have the talents to make for an empathetic monster. After Star Trek Beyond and Kingsman: The Secret Service, it's obvious she has a huge screen presence The Mummy might benefit from.
Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
The Mummy opens in theaters June 9.
