'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows' Deleted Scenes: April Meets April, And Flirts With Casey

The Turtles are the star of the show in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, but plenty of fans have a soft spot for April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and Casey Jones (Stephen Amell) as well. A couple of deleted scenes give more screentime to the Turtles' human friends, and even makes some room for a blast from the past, in the form of Judith Hoag — the original April O'Neil from the 1990 movie. They're both cute scenes. The first one is a clever twist on the "kiss of distraction" trope we've seen in so many films and movies, and Fox and Amell have a fun, fizzy chemistry. (They might have better chemistry here than they do in the actual movie, in fact.) The second is a sweet little nod to the franchise's history, with the old April O'Neil (Hoag) positioning herself as a sort of mentor to the new April O'Neil (Fox). But it's easy to understand why they got cut. Neither feels all that essential to the story at hand, which is all about the Turtles.

Out of the Shadows made an earnest effort to learn from the mistakes of the 2014 film, and among other things that meant shifting the focus back to the Turtles. No one goes to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie so they can watch the heroes in a half shell play second fiddle to their human friends, after all. And if that means less time for April, so be it. She still got plenty to do, and Amell deserves credit for making the Casey Jones role his own (even if some fans of earlier incarnations are less than thrilled with this nicer, more clean-cut variation).Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is now available on Digital HD, and hits Blu-ray September 20.
