Second New Universal Monsters Film Now Has A Release Date

That new shared Universal Monsters universe just got a bit larger. The Alex Kurtzman-directed Mummy reboot will still be released June 24, 2016. Now the studio has dated the second film in the series for the following year. Unfortunately, the studio isn't yet saying which monster will be at the center of the new picture. Read more about the next Universal Monsters movie remake below.

The next Universal Monsters movie remake is being referred to as UNTITLED UNIVERSAL MONSTER FRANCHISE FILM and it'll be released on Friday, April 21, 2017. Currently, it's the only film on that date, but it's two weeks after Pacific Rim 2 and two weeks before Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

So which monster will it be? The official description gives very little info:

A new epic action-adventure in a series produced and overseen by the creative team of Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek series) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious series), the UNTITLED UNIVERSAL MONSTER FRANCHISE FILM will follow The Mummy in their new initiative to revive and reimagine Universal's classic monsters for a modern audience.

Just based on the fact they already, technically, done Dracula and The Mummy is already locked, you'd guess this would be either The Wolfman or Frankenstein. However, since there's already an unrelated Frankenstein movie coming out in 2015, they'd likely want to avoid confusion with that. I'd then guess this is The Wolfman. The Invisible Man seems possible too, but he's just not thought of in the same breath as some of his counterparts.

What we do know is, whichever monster is at the center of this movie, it'll fit in with The Mummy.

Speaking of which, a few weeks back too, some potential plot details about Kurtzman's Mummy reboot hit the net. They're still considered rumors but considering they line up with almost everything else we've heard about the films – modern setting, new take – it seems very plausible. Read about that here.
