Andrew Garfield Suggests It Doesn't Matter If He's In 'Sinister Six'

You'd think Andrew Garfield's involvement would be crucial to the Spider-Man franchise, seeing as he's, y'know, Spider-Man. But as Sony makes plans to expand the universe, it seems Spidey won't be the star of every show anymore. Indeed, according to Garfield, it doesn't even matter whether he shows up in the upcoming spinoff Sinister Six. Read his comments after the jump.

The Toronto Sun got the opportunity to pump Garfield for information about Sinister Six. "I know more than I'm allowed to say right now," the actor teased. "I can say I'm really excited about Drew Goddard, who's going to be writing and directing The Sinister Six movie. And whether I'm involved in that or not is kind of immaterial."

While Garfield is being careful not to confirm or deny anything, his response does suggest that even if he is in Sinister Six, it won't be in a major role. At most, it sounds like, we can expect a cameo. That raises the question of what all the villains will be doing in Sinister Six if they aren't battling Spidey, but we've heard a few hints about the return of Norman Osborn and whatnot.

Garfield has led two Amazing Spider-Man movies so far and is expected to reprise his role for 2018's The Amazing Spider-Man 3. However, Sony has shown signs of wanting to branch out from the usual Spidey-centric adventures. In addition to Sinister Six, which is expected to feature the Green Goblin and the Rhino among others, the studio is also developing spinoffs built around Venom and an as-yet-unnamed female character.

Whether a Spider-Man movie without Spider-Man is a stroke of genius or a crazy act of desperation remains to be seen. On the one hand, we'd welcome a foray into uncharted territory after retreading familiar storylines in the first two Amazing Spider-Man movies. There's a real opportunity here to mix up the usual superhero movie tropes.

On the other hand, Sony's Spider-Man franchise seems to be on shaky ground as it is. The films are still making money, but they don't seem to attract nearly the level of devotion that competing franchises at other studios do. It's hard to see how downplaying the central character would help. In any case, we'll see how Sony's gamble pays off when Sinister Six opens November 11, 2016.
