Joseph Gordon-Levitt Offers Another 'Sandman' Update

Hollywood has been trying to get an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman off the ground for years, and as of now it looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be the guy to finally make it happen.

Although Warner Bros. has not yet said when exactly we'll see the Sandman movie, the producer (and possibly also star and director) assures that it's coming. "We're working towards it," Gordon-Levitt affirmed in a recent status update. Hit the jump to read his latest comments on the project.

Right now we're working on a script. It's me and Goyer and the screenwriter and Neil Gaiman, as well as the good folks at DC and Warner Bros. It's a really cool team of people. It's a lot of the same people who worked on the Nolan "Batman" movies. It's really exciting. There's not a script yet, we're still kind of working it out because it's such a complicated adaptation because "Sandman" wasn't written as novels. "Sin City" was written as a novel. "Sandman" is 75 episodic issues. There's a reason people have been trying and failing to adapt "Sandman" for the past 20 years.

Jack Thorne was writing the screenplay last we heard, but Gordon-Levitt doesn't mention him here. In any case, it's clear we won't be seeing the film for another few years. Nevertheless, Gordon-Levitt seems optimistic that they're on the right track. "You know, we're still in the middle of it, so I don't want to make any claims, but I think we've got the right ideas," he said.

Those ideas may include some hints at the greater Sandman universe. "It's such a huge world. We're definitely talking about in terms of a whole world." But as for whether Gordon-Levitt himself might try exploring other aspects of the Sandman universe, he'll say only, "I can't say anything committal."
