'SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out Of Water' Trailer: Kooks Get Heroic

There's a go-to tactic for animated properties that want to change things up a bit: put the characters in the real world. That's the trick SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water 3D gets up to, as a real-world pirate (well, real-world in the movie's story, anyway) gets his hands on a book that can turn any story into truth. And that leads the residents of Bikini Bottom into a new existence as CG-animated, 3D characters. They look pretty good, actually!

This trailer is the same one that was shown at Comic Con last week, though it is missing a bit of opening teaser text that parodied The Avengers. Otherwise, you'll get the idea.

At Comic Con, voice actor Tom Kenney told Fandango,

There is a live-action climax, but it's still rated G. It's a big, bombastic superhero tweak, where we tweak these big end-of-the-world movies, the Superman and Avengers movie, where cities get leveled. ... This is extremely cartoony, the wacky version of that. We get to see a buffed-up, pumped-up SongeBob and his friends in superhero form, SpongeBob becomes The Invincibubble, who has these weird bubble powers.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Sponge Out of Water 3D opens in 2015. The characters were created by Stephen Hillenburg; the movie stars Antonio Banderas, Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, and Douglas Lawrence.
