See Loads Of 'Edge Of Tomorrow' Concept Art

Edge of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is a terrific summer movie. It leaps off from a seemingly derivative premise (Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers) to create excellent action sequences and a couple of solid characters. The script is surprisingly restrained, the alien enemies are unusual and memorable, and the whole film is funny — a lot more funny than the stern ad campaign let on.

A new set of concept art — well, an old set of art newly released to the public — doesn't give much of a hint to the film's sense of humor, but it does show off the evolution of the story's aliens and tech designs. There are some great shots here of the flailing, lightning-quick Mimic aliens. And there are a few of the human soldiers tasked with preventing them from taking Earth as their new playground. While you may have seen the film's powered exoskeletons in trailers and posters, you can now see how one early design might have transformed some of the human armor into something like the Batpod (above). I was brought on by Warners Bros at the very early stages of the production. Initially working with Doug and then Oliver when he joined. I led the team that helped concept develop the exosuit which took about six months of work, some of the images had all of the team participating under me due to time constraints . Special mention to Chris and Sam who collaborated on some of the models.

As the suit went into production I then worked with Nick Davis and the VFX crews for nearly a year to work on all things Mimics. Thanks to Ivan who developed some incredible clay sculpts.
