'Snowpiercer' U.S. Trailer: Chris Evans Leads A Revolution

After playing squeaky-clean Captain America in The Winter Soldier, Chris Evans gets to play a much grittier sort of hero in Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer. Some of that grit is literal — Evans' Curtis looks like he hasn't had a shower in a good long while — but mostly, it's spiritual.

The dark thriller is set in an Earth that's been ravished by a new ice age. The only humans left are the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that endlessly circles the globe. Inside, however, there's trouble brewing. The lower classes in the back of the train, led by Curtis, are plotting an uprising against the rich folks in the front. In the midst of the summer movie season, Snowpiercer stands out as something a bit darker and more ambitious than your typical mindless blockbuster. (Not that there's anything wrong with a bit of mindless entertainment from time to time.) Bong isn't the kind of director to pull his punches, and so his Snowpiercer isn't one of those uplifting David-and-Goliath stories about a scrappy hero overcoming the big bad villain.

The actual plot of the movie is pretty simple: Curtis and his fellow revolutionaries are trying to get from the back of the train to the front. What makes Snowpiercer feel rich is Bong's nuanced understanding of human nature. Even our hero Curtis has some very dark demons to deal with.

Also among the many things Snowpiercer has going for it is a jaw-dropping cast. John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Kang-ho Song, and Ah-sung Ko play some of the folks who get wrapped up in the rebellion from the tail end; Tilda Swinton, Alison Pill, and Ed Harris are among the wealthy elite that Curtis is rebelling against.

Snowpiercer — in its full, uncut glory — gets a limited release starting June 27.
