'Jurassic World' Could Begin New Jurassic Park Series, Animatronic Dinosaurs Confirmed [Updated]

It's no surprise to hear that Universal has at least tentative plans for a new Jurassic Park series, kickstarted by the upcoming Jurassic World. No major studio goes into a sequel like this one thinking it'll be a one-off situation. But it's another thing to get the info straight from one of the participants. In this case, it's director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) who says that this could be the birth of a new Jurassic Park series. He also confirmed some of the talk about animatronic dinosaur use in the new production.

Update: EW has released the first image of Bryce Dallas Howard in character in the film, along with two other behind the scenes shots. See those below.

Speaking to Empire, Trevorrow said he would like to direct possible sequels, and explained just a bit about what the thinking is at Universal:

We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot. We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story.

The second and third Jurassic Park films, which were created at a time when sequels weren't as much of an expected thing as they are now, were cobbled together without much of a plan. So the thinking outlined above is relatively modern — it's the new standard of mapping out a potential multi-part story from the get-go. Which can be smart, but can also shortchange individual installments, if the scripts for each film aren't tight in their own right.

Speaking of that first script, we still don't know much about what this new story entails, other than the fact that it is set 22 years after Jurassic Park. But after confirming that animatronic dinosaurs would be used for the film (in a statement paraphrased by Empire, so there's no direct quote) Trevorrow does say,

It's about alpha dominance and the fact that humans have been the alpha species for a very long time. And so now we've brought back another that happened to be the alpha species during its time, and we have to co-exist, so what is that relationship?

The director also added some explanation about the character played by Omar Sy, and how he relates to Chris Pratt's lead character. You can head to Empire for that. Jurassic World also stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson, Jake Johnson, Ty Simpkins, and Vincent D'Onofrio. It opens on June 12, 2015.

Update: Here is the first shot of any of the actors, featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, from EW. There are also two behind the scenes shots, which, sadly, don't show much.Bryce-Dallas-Howard_JW
