'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' TV Spot Features Either A Big Spoiler Or Deep Misdirection
There's a conversation going on now about spoilers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The identity of the second character in the film's title is at the center of it — most comics fans know the history of the Winter Soldier, but general movie audiences don't. Is his origin a spoiler, or simply something that Cap has to discover, while not being a big reveal for the audience?
There have also been (mostly debunked) concerns about spoilers for the film showing up via toys and a faked set of cue titles from the score.
Now a new TV spot has shown up, and one line in the middle of the thing has people calling "spoiler" once more. One simple argument says that anything chosen for official marketing can't possibly be a spoiler — keep in mind how Marvel dealt with the Mandarin for Iron Man 3 — but there's no question that the line in question is in this spot for a reason.
The line in question is "Fury's last words were not to trust anyone," heard as characters face what appears to be a body under a sheet. So does Nick Fury fall? Or is this a big misdirection intended to get us paying (more) attention and talking about the movie? I'd bet on the latter, especially given the way the spot is cut. It's like a stage trick — we're invited to see one thing, when there's probably something else going on altogether. Again, remember the Mandarin.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4.
Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
